About UR-REGENESIS
History of UR-REGENESIS
Although few institutions in the entire world provide treatments
using regenerative medicine to the general public, these are
generally unknown. Therefore, the general public has little to no
idea about the meaning of regenerative medicine or any
applications that derive from this technology. People with single
or simultaneous damages in various body systems resulting from
transport road traffic accidents, war attacks, permanent diseases
and incurable disabilities have currently no alternatives to
regenerate their damaged bodies. They can apply for organ
transplants, however the demand is too high and, thus, there is
currently a severe shortage of donor organs. For this reason, we
know that professional information regarding current advances
in medicine can truly make a difference in the life of people with
permanent diseases or disabilities and the life of their families.
Scientists and doctors have not yet promoted public awareness
about the advances in regeneration that have proved successful
in human tissues. We pretend that it is very early days to
massively promote these advances, however, the real fear
behind secretive scientific advancement appears to be based on
past advertising either raising unrealistic curative expectations or
associating regeneration with the unethical, now unnecessary
use of embryonic stem cells. Despite our fears, unless we take
action now, another decade or two will pass by before we have
the opportunity to participate, invest and start benefiting from
this fast-growing discipline.
A worldwide project had to be created to generate public
awareness of the medical treatments that are currently available
or in development for the promotion of human tissue
regeneration, thereby establishing the pillars for the creation of
regenerative medicine clinics, where treatment becomes
available for everybody.
Based on this insight, an initial idea to create a charity was born
in February 2003 when the Archimedes prize was awarded to
Maria Cristina Ovejero-Boglione with the aim of promoting
outstanding breakthroughs in her career. However, when she
started the Self Expression and Leadership Programme provided
by Landmark Education in August 2004 she realised that her
most ambitious dream of facilitating services to the entire world
had the potential to come true provided that global collaborative
work is achieved. Given that in April 2003 she carried out an
investigation with Dr Ling-Sun Jen at Imperial College London to
compare various current treatments being used to promote
regeneration of the optic tract and they concluded that the most
efficient treatment comprises a combinatorial therapy, she
studied regeneration in other systems of the body to find that the
principle of combinatorial treatment proves successful anywhere
in the body (e.g. stimulation of surviving cells, inhibition of the
injury scar and possible recruitment of stem cells to replace lost
cells).
Consequently she created the U. R. Regenesis project in
September 2004 to promote collaboration between existing
institutions, researchers and specialist doctors for the creation of
online downloadable electronic books that will include examples
of human treatments to illustrate the power of regenerative
medicine. The advantage of editing these books now, and not in
a decade, is a likely increase in further investment that will
undoubtedly result in fast development of these technologies
and will therefore be in accordance with universal demands.
